Welcome to the 2010 IB World Student Conference!
President Ray's IBWSC 2010 Welcome Message
The opportunity of a lifetime awaits IB diploma candidates in August 2010 when the IB World Student Conference takes place in Corvallis, Oregon on the historic Oregon State University campus! We hope you will join us for this exciting opportunity in the beautiful natural setting of the Willamette Valley.
We are delighted to host this event, welcoming students from IB schools the world over. The conference is designed with the mission of IB in mind:
“… to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect.”
Five days of enriching activities aim to foster cultural awareness and communication, celebrate global citizenship and empower youth to make decisions for a just and sustainable world. Highlights of the conference will include the following:
- Renowned speakers addressing the six topics of the IB community theme, “Sharing our Humanity:” the fight against global poverty, peacekeeping and conflict prevention, education for all, global infectious disease, the digital divide, natural disaster prevention and environmental concerns
- Cross-cultural small-group discussion and interaction to spark imagination, inspire critical thinking, and encourage cooperation and sharing of worldviews among students
- Access to world-class science facilities at Oregon State University including the Linus Pauling Institute, the Oregon State University Radiation Center, the O.H. Hinsdale Wave Research Laboratory, and the OSU Open Source Lab.
- Excursion to the spectacular Oregon Coast on the Pacific Ocean to visit the Mark O. Hatfield Marine Science Center and experience an authentic Native American salmon bake
- Student collaboration to create a CAS project for implementation, carrying forward the ideas and energy generated at the conference
- Balance of academic pursuits and social activities, including international films, cultural exchange, and international games and sports
More than ever, it is up to the young people in our world to achieve international understanding. We believe the 2010 IB World Student Conference will promote the goal of creating understanding and empathy between individuals, and thus, nations.
